THE DIFFERENT BREEDS OF SHEEP ON THE FARM

SCOTCH MULES
Scotch Mules are intentionally a crossbred sheep out of Scottish Blackface ewes sired by a Bluefaced Leicester ram.  Scotch Mules have very good mothering instincts and is a good hardy sheep.  Good quality table meat is produced from this breed.

WELSH MULES
Welsh Mules, again are a crossbreed sheep out of a Bluefaced Leicester ram crossed with a Welsh Mountain, Bealah or Welsh Hill Speckled ewe.  These sheep are very hardy and have a very good mothering instinct also.

HEBRIDEAN CROSS SHEEP
Hebridean Cross Sheep are a domestic smaller breed with black faces and legs.  They do not have any wool on their face or legs.  They originate from the islands off the western coast of Scotland.  This breed is now classed as a rare breed.

SOAY SHEEP
Soay Sheep are a rare breed sheep also originating off of the islands of the western coast of Scotland.  This breed represents the primitive sheep of the bronze age and are believed to be the ancestors of the first domestic breed.  At a glance, these sheep look aloof, wary but are very graceful and resemble a small antelope or deer.

LEICESTER LONGWOOL SHEEP
Leicester Longwool Sheep heritage can be traced back over 200 years.  The sheep breeder and agricultural pioneer Robert Bakewell developed this breed at Disley Grange in Leicestershire.  These sheep are of big frame and produce large quantities of meat.  In 1725 Their wool was used to meet the demands of the workforce at the start of the Agricultural Revolution.  This is also classed as another rare breed.
